Dr. Gail Bushur-Irwin, Dr. Gail to her clients, is a veterinarian in the Dallas Fort/Worth Metroplex. She’s been practicing veterinary medicine for over 22 years. Dr. Gail spent her formative years in Illinois on a farm that specializes in dairy cattle and American Quarter Horses. She went to Lakeland Community College and then the University of Illinois for her veterinarian degree. She graduated from there in 2003. She went to work for Newton Animal Hospital in 2003 and began to hone veterinary skills in mixed animal practice. The clinic provided care to a local dog pound as well as a local animal shelter which showed her the need to help provide the best veterinary services to all the pets and clients. From there, she went back to her roots and worked for Effingham Veterinary Clinic. She expanded their small animal care and also provided her skills to the dairy community. Her and her husband, Trevor, moved to southeast Illinois to Mt. Carmel, IL. Dr. Gail worked for a practice there for a short time. In 2010, pregnant with her son Dayton, Dr. Gail started Bum Paw Animal Hospital in Grayville, Illinois. She spent a lovely 4 years there. She took some time off to spend with her son but her passion for veterinary medicine called her back into service in May of 2015 in Princeton, Indiana. If you are keeping track, this is her second state of licensure for veterinary medicine. Fast forward to 2019, and state license number 3, Dr. Gail would take a position in Houston, Texas at a clinic that served the underserved area of Houston. Trevor’s position with USDA saw the family move to the metroplex and in March of 2020, Dr. Gail began to work for Eastlake Veterinary Hospital. The primary reason Dr. Gail chose East Lake was because of their orphanage and extensive rescue work. Her work at East Lake allowed her to network with people in rescue and she began to build her network of rescue friends. In 2023, Dr. Gail filled in for a doctor at SPCA cat flights in Dallas, TX for a doctor that was on maternity leave. This turned out to be very fulfilling for Dr. Gail as she now does all of the health checks for the cat flight program. Almost 9,000 cats have left Dallas to be adopted! It furthers her ability to continue to provide care and advice to provide the best outcomes possible for these animals. On February 7, 2025, Dr. Gail’s north star (her mom), Charlene Bushur passed away. Murray, her mom’s dog, came to live with Dr. Gail. Murray was adopted for her mom to provide emotional support to her mom while her mom was recovering from sepsis. Murray provided her mom emotional support through almost 13 years of her mom’s life. Murray was there with her through her last hospital stays and and was there with her when she passed away. Murray provided immense comfort that can only be provided with the unconditional love from a pet. To honor her mom, Dr. Gail is starting the Kay Foundation. This foundation is looking for people and organizations to partner with her to provide best practice medicine to companion animals at a reasonable price. Part of her next step, and state license number 4, is to travel to California to provide best practice surgeries to shelter pets. Dr. Gail has the vision to provide the best medicine at a low cost, reasonable price to as many animals in North Texas as she can!
Kay foundation is a veterinary nonprofit mobile clinic ran by Charlene’s youngest daughter Dr Gail Bushur-Irwin aka Dr. Gail to her clients. The foundation was inspired by a her mother’s deep love for animals and the joy they brought to her life. Our mission is to ensure every pet owner has access to the compassionate care their pets deserve, delivered in a supportive and loving environment.
In Loving Memory of Charlene K. Bushur
